Time: by arrangement with Dr Chowdhury.

You will need two appointments for completion of the procedure. The initial appointment is for assessment and completion of the paperwork. The following appointment is for the actual procedure.

Nexplanon is a contraceptive implant that consists of a single, small, white to off-white, flexible rod that is inserted just under the skin on the inside of the upper arm. The implant is approximately 40 mm long and 2 mm wide (about the same size as a hairgrip or a matchstick).

Nexplanon is a progestogen-only contraceptive implant. It has replaced Implanon. Nexplanon is a type of Long-acting reversible contraception that adds to the many methods available to women today. It is inserted just under the skin on the inside of the upper arm and releases low dose of etonogestrel for up to 3 years.

The Nexplanon contraceptive implant can stop you getting pregnant in one of two ways:

1. The contraceptive implant prevents eggs from ripening in the ovaries

2. The contraceptive implant thickens the mucus at the entry to your womb (the cervix). This makes it difficult for sperm to penetrate and reach an egg to fertilise it. It also makes the lining of your womb thinner and less ready to accept a fertilised egg.
